Braces 101: What to Expect Before, During, and After Treatment

Orthodontic treatment can help achieve a straighter, healthier smile. Whether you’re considering traditional braces or Invisalign®, knowing what to expect can help make the process smoother. Below, our Springfield dental team offers an overview of what to expect at different points in the orthodontic treatment process.

Before Braces

The journey begins with a consultation, where your dentist or orthodontist will evaluate your teeth and bite. X-rays and digital scans of the mouth are taken to provide a more detailed look at the existing oral anatomy and bite, after which our team can create a customized treatment plan. If traditional braces are chosen, spacers may be placed to create room for molar bands. For those opting for Invisalign, a series of clear, removable aligners will be designed based on the treatment plan.

During Treatment

Braces may cause temporary soreness after placement and during routine adjustments. Proper oral hygiene is essential, as brackets and wires can trap food and plaque. Sticky or hard foods should be avoided to prevent damage. Invisalign aligners must be worn for at least 20–22 hours daily and switched out as directed to keep treatment on track. On average, braces treatment takes 12-24 months, while traditional Invisalign typically takes around 12 months. That said, at Innovative Dental, we also offer Accelerated Invisalign as an option for patients looking to complete their treatment as quickly as possible.

After Treatment

Once teeth have reached their ideal position, braces or aligners are no longer needed. A retainer helps maintain the results and prevents teeth from shifting. Whether using traditional braces or Invisalign, commitment to post-treatment care is key to preserving a straight, confident smile.
Any form of orthodontic treatment requires patience, but the end result—a confident, beautiful smile—is well worth the effort!
